Cellino – anger
So Massimo Cellino has broken cover in the wake of the spineless United display against a deeply ordinary Bolton Wanderers side at the weekend. He’s raged, primarily at the players, calling them “chickens”. They didn’t fight, he said. They are guilty and without pride; they should be ashamed of themselves. Can any of us honestly argue with the wisdom and accuracy of that little lot? Wouldn’t we all be queuing up to kick a few arses, as Signor Cellino has expressed the earnest desire to do, if only we had the chance? And why, pray, do we feel this way? It’s because we’ve invested hard-earned cash in supporting our team, that’s why – only to see overpaid non-triers throw that loyalty and commitment back in our bitterly-disappointed faces. Imagine, then, how Cellino feels, several million down already, hauling the club out of deep and rank ordure – and being messed about by a dilatory governing body into the bargain. No wonder he’s a little miffed.
Some have said that Cellino has overstepped the mark in being quite so vocal, not yet being the confirmed owner and all. For a couple of reasons, I strongly disagree with that viewpoint. Firstly – as referred to above – the man has paid – paid handsomely – for his right to express a vehement point of view. He who pays the piper calls the tune or, in this case, kicks the arse, if that’s his reaction of choice. Nobody, surely, can deny the man who has funded this club over the last few weeks when, due to inept management and a craven refusal to dig deep on the part of GFH et al, we might otherwise have been well on the way to the wall by now.
Cellino will know just how much he’s stumped up in wages, with absolutely no guarantee that his purchase of the club will end up being sanctioned. He will know exactly how much X has “earned” and how much Y is being paid for his headless chicken act. It must drive him mad to have actually seen those players fannying about on a professional football field and succumbing without so much as a peep of protest to a team they should be taking to the cleaners – especially at home. The money the Italian has shelled out gives him an absolute right, in my view, to express himself as strongly as he sees fit. Good on him for condemning the guilty parties in strong and unequivocal terms. It’s not before time.
Which brings me on to reason number two that Cellino was right to act as he did, confirmed owner or not. A bit of anger and invective has been needed from within the club for far too long now. It’s all been much too friendly and cosy as far as we can tell from the regular soundbites, and there are people on the payroll taking blatant advantage of that easy-going atmosphere. They will have been aware, perhaps, of some discontent out here in the real world, but they appear to be living and working in a little pink bubble where all is sweetness and light and, oh so polite – so why should they care if a storm is raging outside of that bubble? Somebody needs to shake the place up a bit. I think we all know who that somebody should be – but if that’s not happening, then – by all means Massimo, old son, you stand up for all of us out here. Vent your spleen, rattle a few cages, have a go. Maybe if they see the guy holding the purse-strings getting slightly aerated, they might sit up and take notice – due to a footballer’s well-known respect and concern for the bottom line.
There have been far too many humiliating results lately, far too many score-lines that speak all too clearly of extremely well-paid young men who simply don’t care – not anywhere near as much as they should, given the honour that is theirs to wear that white shirt. That’s the ultimate in not good enough, and it’s high time someone let loose a few slings and arrows at those guilty parties and read the riot act here and there. For all of these reasons, I’m glad to hear that Cellino has climbed down off the fence where most of the rest of the Leeds United personnel appear to be roosting, and has made his acerbic views known, in no uncertain terms.
We’re likely to be able to gauge what kind of effect this Latin bollocking has had when Leeds meet McDermott’s old club, Reading, on Tuesday. I hope the players feel upset, angry and humiliated to have been spoken of in such very frank and derisive terms. No professional likes having his or her professionalism called into question. In the macho world of football, nobody will relish being called a chicken, or having shame called down upon their heads. The players should be hurt, they should be annoyed; above all they should be possessed by a bloody-minded determination to show exactly what they’re made of. They should be ready to go out and sweat blood in a do or die attempt to prove Cellino wrong and to put in an effort to prove they do have the bottle to play for, as McDermott puts it, a “big badge”. And, lest we forget, a demanding crowd.
Ironically, such an effort would only go to confirm that the Italian was actually 100% right to say what he said about the abject and spineless display the players gave in the Bolton game. It would draw comparison with the second half against Huddersfield when, as one of them put it, “we did it for Brian”. Well, chaps – you’ve done bugger-all for him since. But take three points off Reading on Tuesday, and a lot would be forgiven, if not forgotten. Such is the way of football and human nature.
What Cellino has achieved with his outburst – beyond any reasonable doubt – is to focus the most intense scrutiny on how the players in those Leeds United shirts acquit themselves on Tuesday evening in the Reading game. Under those eleven “big badges” – are there eleven big enough hearts to take on board the Massimo Cellino message and to come up with the right response? We shall see soon enough.

Most of them do know, and have known all season, and that’s part of the problem. This is an inherited problem. We have kids without leadership and a large number of timeservers and minor talents out of their depth. Warnock is running down his career and doesn’t appear to care, Peltier – who knows what goes on in his thick head, Wootton and Lees are obviously good enough but appear out of their depth, Murphy was good this time but has appeared out of his depth before, Austin is thick, as is Pearce when he plays, and so the team doesn’t work.
We’ve had the prozone figures about Kebe this week, so we know he’s putting in the effort. Is he suddenly useless, or playing in a team that doesn’t work, a team that CAN’T work? Some players don’t try, some just look like they don’t try.
What it adds up to is a team that should be around 16th or 17th place, plus McCormack (who is carrying an injury). I don’t think a different manager could do better – as McDermott said, when his mask slipped a few weeks ago when Varney skived off, ‘What can I do?’
Some of our team are permanently clueless, some of them are clueless because they lack leadership, and some of them are are just crap. But who do we play instead? Poleon for Wickham, Hunt for McCormack? White is injured so if we drop our wingers we go back to 4-3-3 or the diamond? We know we can’t keep getting away with that. Our form was always going to be worse in the 2nd half of the season because we are a patched up side who haven’t strengthened enough. To go back to players, do we play Brown and Tonge? Do we recall Drury? Of course not. We’ll have to limp on until the summer when, whoever owns us, we get rid of several big fat lumps of dead wood. If we’re skint we could do something if we get a fee for Morrison and add a couple of experienced players – good experienced players instead of bad ones. That way our young players will improve next year.
As I and many others have said before, we’re recovering from Bates, we have a rotten squad and some kids, and there’s not much point in moaning about it.
As for bloody McDermott, a 40% win rate, significantly better than Warnock – with this shower? Stop moaning and give him a medal.

That 40% figure IS impressive – how much more so was it before the recent dismal run of 2 wins in 15 games, two of which were appalling thrashings, one of which was an easy win for a League 2 side – and one of the wins was down tom 45 minutes when BMcD wasn’t in charge, with the other being down to a wind-assisted fluke from Warnock? I think the saddest post I’ve read among the many dejected messages which fully justifies Cellino’s wrath when speaking on behalf of the supporters regarding the abysmal attitude of the players, was by a certain Ken who wrote:
“I took my son for the first time, he said it was horrible and never wants to go back…. I’m gutted, it should be a special moment when you take your kids for the first time. It was for me!”
Damn right! Every player should be playing with the realisation that there might be some kid in the stands coming to watch Leeds for the first time. If pride in the shirt isn’t enough, which obviously for many it isn’t.

Cellino has the sort of passion and pride we need for our club. He may have the perfect reputation that many would like but it seems there are very few of those anyway….after all we had to put up with KB for long enough anyway. I think we need Cellino badly so that we can be to move forward with someone who won’t put up with the drivel we have had to.

BMC can only do so much really. we wouldnt be watching this tripe if GFH had fulfilled their promises. I think in wickham and butland we have been shown the calibre of player he wants in and would have from the start if that arab bank hadnt pulled the rug frm under him in transfer dealings. yesterdays result was due to tired and absent key players. kebe i kind of feel sorry for, form cannot be turned on and off like a switch especially when uv been out of focus for a year and thn u go to a club thats way out of shape and uv got 1000’s of ur own supporters tellin u ur shit. very similar for stewart. bri hasnt really had opportunity to get quality in form players. he i feel has done aswell as any1 could in the same situation but things must improve. i for 1 just hope he gets chance to prove the doubters wrong.

Sorry but if BMcD can’t get these players up for a game why waste any more time on him. Saturday was meant to be our Cup Final, our last charge for the play off’s and we capitulated pathetically. Nice guy, wrong manager for Leeds and as I saw an Einstein quote on a site this weekend -‘insanity is when you keep doing the same thing over and over again in the hope that the end result will change!’

I totally agree with cellino , and yes you’re right rob he holds the purse strings and has more right than anyone else to feel cheated , but I also think this could be the first of many out bursts, I also have a feeling that the future rants will be often and not so welcome by Leeds fans when they come , as you’re written before rob , its not going to be boring with cellino at the helm , I just hope its not going to be cringe worthy

Great post Rob which I endorse completely and what a pleasant change it must be for Mr Cellino to be publicly scrutinised for being completely and unquestionably honest!!! There would be almost 29,000 people willing to act as character witnesses for him if the FL were to question the honesty and accuracy of his assessment of our ‘players’ (I was going to use the word ‘team’ but it didn’t seem a very appropriate description of the shambles that I witnessed yesterday) !!! More straight talking please Mr Cellino cos you appear to have as much passion about our club as you have money so you deserve the right to kick a***s!!! No more chickens, No more Mr Nice Guy either (Brian take note cos Mr Cellino blamed the players not the manager- but!!!….. when the going gets tough, the tough get going). The Reading match now presents a very early opportunity to gauge how much respect our squad has for Mr Cellino. Let play commence!!

It’s such a refreshing change to hear some honesty around Elland Road and Cellino’s amazing outburst about the Leeds players being “chickens”, was certainly refreshing and long overdue in my opinion.
For too long, McDermott and his “shrinking violet” players have been hiding behind every excuse in the book and surely they cannot continue to blame the pro-longed, take-over for their terrible performances.
Players are protected far too much in these “politically correct” days, where managers are terrified to criticise their own players and what Cellino said is what the majority of Leeds fans are saying.
When I heard what Cellino had said, I said “YES”, at last, some scathing criticism that they totally deserve, from someone who wants value for his money, or should I say, value for his millions.

heh Leeds people, only one of you gave us Bolton people the truthful response, our team was not ‘ordinary’ or anything like. To concede one goal with eleven scored and nine out of nine points is good, (its been a long time coming but we’ve had horrendous injuries and spending restrictions for three years)! So give us some credit we can only play whats in front of us. Don’t fool yourselves about your history, yes it was awesome in the 70’s but since then…. Don’t get me wrong were the same we’ve won little since even longer ago except a few promotions!
On one of our fans chat sites, some idiot from Leeds has said we have even copied you for calling ourselves ‘whites’ this idiot, didn’t know any history and how old BWFC really is! This season you beat us @ the Reebok, in a decent game, we’ve had similiar problems to you but were a smaller town and smaller team with a smaller fan base and less funds!
But getting back to the game, come on be honest, any team winning away from home by such a large score as 1 -5 has got to be more than ‘ordinary’!
It’d be good to see a strong Leeds team in the league and if your Italian money man can help do that, well good on him and yes from an outsiders point of view as some have wrote, hes paying hes allowed to shout!
But don’t forget that your writing about pride and hearts and badges and stuff but these young guys are just employees, why do you expect them to be so different from you? Are you so proud to be in your jobs? Would you say ‘No thanks’ if i offered you £Ks to do a job you like?

I’m under no illusion that Cellino is first and foremost a businessman. He knows if Leeds get promoted it is good business. But then it’s a win-win situation for him and Leeds faithful.
It helps that he is passionate about football though that bring interference when it comes to managers and squad. And even if he’s not ‘genuinely’ passionate about Leeds now (it’s difficult to get passionate about any other team than your own) I think he will come round to catching the bug. I sense Cellino is the kind of maverick Leeds needs at this time and vice versa. I could be off the mark here, but then he’s yet to become owner. Should he be passed fit and then do the unthinkable and get us back in the top flight he will become a folk hero – and that would sound good in any language.
The problem with Mr ‘nice guy’ Brian is that is his flaw. He is just too nice. I think he was also chosen partly as an antidote to Mr ‘nasty’ Neil. It often happens that way – a swing to the opposite. Whatever Brian’s telling the players isn’t working, irrespective of his team selection. I also think he finds the job a little overwhelming, at least his expression is often one of bewilderment like he’s just walked out of a dark room into the light. The fact that he shows so much faith in certain players who consistently under perform is an inability to be flexible – trust instinct – take risks – all the signs of a manager who is confident. But given what he’s been through of late, he has every reason to lack confidence.
So will Cellino keep him if he takes over? I can’t see it happening for long, especially if he perceives the fans are on Brian’s back. Just as I can’t see Cellino walking away as he says he will if the FL say no. He doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who won’t put up a fight when he has his mind set. So I hope he’s bluffing on that one.
I like his comment that he’s not come to Leeds to steal anything as there’s nothing left. But then since the premature sacking of Brian (which might have been a stroke of genius ahead of it’s time) Cellino really hasn’t put a foot wrong. He says the right things and is letting the Leeds supporters play into his hands. He knows he has us at his mercy. He also knows the FL would probably be signing our death warrant if they turn him down. He’s a cool customer. How this will bode for us in the future is an unknown. I just know we at Leeds need an injection of something strong and fit for purpose – soon. Hopefully Cellino is the one to provide and administer that.
What is guaranteed there will be no let up on this crazy ride. Flamingo land has nothing that comes even near it!

Whilst I have read your blog on a frequent basis of late I haven’t posted previously. Here goes my cherry!!!
Unfortunately, whilst the rocket was needed I fear it will have little or no effect. I feel the team is playing with fear and looks tactically all at sea. What is obvious is a complete lack of adventure or innovation at set pieces. All looks very stale.
McD appears obsessed to make the two winger system work with two players sadly lacking in guile right now. Although one does a lot of sprinting and that’s what counts…….apparently?
A rocket will no doubt make them sweat more on Tuesday but I fear the end result will not change. God help us if Cellino does not get in. The sale of Byram and McC on paper will be done before the seasons ended to reassure nervous creditors.

I don’t expect us to win every game, but I want every team we play to come away knowing that they had a hard fight for every point they may have got. Surely every fan was thinking exactly what Cellino said so fair play to him and hopefully we see a response on Tuesday, but I’m not sure I’d bet on it!

I don’t know if LUFC supporters understand how important we need Massimo’s support. I will leave my comments:
1. Hopefully he will win the yaughtgate stuff. It’s not real estate and is owned in the U.S. He has a good attorney that should get this resolved this Thursday. If not he will walk and all the money he has helped support us will go back to GBH – what a shambles.
2.My opinion of McDermott is that is we need a new manager that Massimo will appoint. Brian has lost the plot and I always say “Mr. Nice guy finishes last”.
3. Nigel Gibbs should be the caretaker manager till the end of the season and keep us in the Championship.
4. This summer we ship out all of the deadwood (at least 8) and bring in young players from the academy any and Italy and we are all set. Am I right?

Another hard hitting and to the point posting from you Rob, wholeheartedly backed by most of the fans on here. Mr. Cellino has every right to rant about the players, after all he who pays the piper calls the tune. Must be kinda worrying for the FL because if he takes over ownership then they will see he is the man who will take us back to the PL and they would hate that. Some of those players who were on the pitch must be trembling in their boots knowing if and when MC takes over they will be out on their ears……especially come end of contract time.

Agree totally apart from the bit about forgiveness if we get a result against Reading. If it takes a hammering every few weeks to get a performance out of this lot(management included) we’ll go nowhere. This situation has been waiting to happen for precisely the reasons you’ve stated,it’s like fairy land at E,R and T,A. They won’t get the well deserved bollocking from BM after no-shows like saturday. I’ve commented as much several times this season,he says all the right things to the supporters but he can’t do the walk. For instance,weren’t we going to go “all out attacking” against boro and qpr? Saturdays pre match battle cry was even better with talk of “embracing” the day and the occasion etc. BIG DOGS BOLLOCKS.

Cagliari at this moment, and have been for the majority of the last 20 years, are in the top flight of their country’s leagues. I’m pretty sure that every single Leeds fan would be ecstatic if the same would happen to Leeds, regardless if they were challenging for Europe or being a mid-table team year after year. Would I prefer to be in Stoke’s position or ours? No-brainer.
You say Cagliari have zip…I suggest you take a look at our squad and division compared to Cagliari’s and then say who has zip.
Also, I guess you won’t find many fans that would prefer administration to Cellino.
Cellino may well not be the Messiah, but at present he is the only one who seems to have the means for a take over.
He may have offences in the past that are well documented, but what’s to say others, Farnan’s consortium for example whoever they may be, do not have hidden ones.
One thing is for certain, we cannot continue along the same vein otherwise the only things in our future are relegation and heartache

There is big difference in class between Leeds and Cagliari as far as fans go. Leeds have the best fans in Europe if not the world. On the playing front we have a lot of dregs left over but they will be gone come the end of June. MC if he is the owner by then will only buy good players, not 30 something has beens. We would own ER and TA again too according to MC which will take the monthly financial loads off the club’s back. So let’s bring him on FL, stop pissing about !

Leeds fan 30 odd yrs Mick,and iv’e seen a few so-called Messiah’s at the club.All i’m saying is once(or twice!) bitten,twice shy!! Every1 jumping to Cellino beat just makes me cringe!! The fact that most fans are willing to just forget his dodgy past dealings,and beg him to buy us,is staggering!! He is a convicted crook….simple,and the majority find him owning us as acceptable!! Granted,am sure alot of owners aren’t as white as they seem,but Cellino’s history is there in black and white,for all 2 c!! After Yeung saga,FL would not want to be conned again,and this approval,as of now,has yet to go through!! As the saying goes,the proof is in the pudding,and if he buys us,i’ll be watching closely,like every Leeds fan,cos he’ll have to deliver!! A few million to pays bills,just won’t cut it!! I think it’s fair to say my view is evolving, based on the pretty damning evidence of the results since Christmas, particularly with the increased quality now at BMcD’s disposal. I might even go so far as to say my faith is dwindling. That happens, and when it does there’s no point in pretending otherwise.

Not that i’m still bitter or anything ,but it’s great to see one of those cheating bayern munich players (uli hoeness)from 75 finally get his comeuppance,the greedy bastard. Hope beckenbaur joins him in jail.

He was initially getting done for secreting 3m euros in a swiss bank (tax evasion) but he’s owned up to hiding at least 5 times that amount. The prosecution were seeking a jail term for the smaller amount,now they’ll throw the key away.

Damo,i thinkj you’ll find that the difference between Cellino and Hoeness is that the latter has admitted his blatent tax evasion. Cellino is innocent until proven guilty as far as i understand. Obviously your visit to the pub to clear your head was a short exercise due to the lack of obstructions.

I think Cellino was well within his rights to air his disgust at the team, BMD needs to step up too and say these things in public too the players was a total shamble and a disgrace to the badge. Cellino for me is the right man for us he wants the club bad and has proved that with a very large cash injection better him than another GFH senario of who owns what and whens next months coffee bill going to get paid.
The simple fact is the league have to sanction this buy out they always harp on about clubs in debt and that it isnt the way forward well obvious to anyone looking from the outside LUFC is a sinking ship while under GFH control what are they going to do to steady it, Take out loans bring in yet more “investors” so the club is under a consortium of people rather than one outright owner and then what happens when one or two want out yet again the club gets ripped to bits and we are left wondering.
Lets hope the league and those that are in power are looking and listening to the fans and also to what Cellino has done for the club with no promise of been the man who owned the land.
As for the players its time they put a shirt on with pride forgot what wages there getting and went out there and played with pride and when i say pride i mean personal pride because lets face facts the performances show they have non right now.

Thing is…..isnt refusal based on unspent convictions/punishments? If Celly pays the fine then thats the end of it with no prison sentence etc. Theres then no basis for refusal….
