Norwich in for McCormack … Yeah, Yeah, Put a New Record On – by Rob Atkinson

Ross McCormack

Ross McCormack

They’re not the brightest bunch down at the Daily Fail – they seem to lack any real intelligence or imagination.  This is odd for a representative of the gutter end of the Fourth Estate which depends so much on fabrication and ludicrous hogwash for the majority of its output.  Perhaps the strain of supporting Mr Camoron’s ridiculous and unelected regime has addled those tiny brains.  Whatever the cause of this rag’s latest foray into Fantasy Island territory, it’s all getting more than a little boring now.

What the Fail‘s dim but persistent hacks have cottoned on to is the fact that the best way to rile Leeds United fans is to run yet another story linking our current best player (no challengers to Mr McCormack for this title at the moment) with Norwich City – based purely on that backwoods Norfolk outfit’s notable record of signing some of the Whites’ meagre pool of talent over the past few seasons.

The difference at the moment of course is that Norwich are now a Championship club again, having suffered an hilarious relegation despite securing the services of 75% of the Leeds United League One midfield. When those regular raids on the Elland Road playing staff were going on, the Canaries were, albeit temporarily, Premier League birds.  It’s a distinction far too subtle for the booze-raddled mind of your average FAILOnline fantasist, but that Premier League status did make a difference for as long as it was a fact. It’s a difference that no longer applies, though – so what (we might ask) is the rationale behind the current story linking our Ross to the ex-Premier League (they are no more, they have ceased to be) Canaries?  I’ll tell you what. Nothing. Nada. Zip, zilch and, as Mr Cellino would no doubts say, niente.  It is all, to use a technical term descriptive of the journalistic standards at the Fail, bollocks.

It’s hardly unlikely that Mr McCormack will move on to pastures new this summer.  He will have no shortage of clubs queuing up to recruit him, and on much better terms than his present agreement.  But Leeds United have him tied to a contract, and Ross himself has spoken of the attraction of staying at Elland Road and winning promotion as captain.  Much better, he said, than playing in the Premier League with “just any old club”.  So how much better still are his current circumstances than the scenario of playing for just another Championship Club, against Leeds United (to whom he has consistently pledged his allegiance) – and uprooting his family into the bargain.  It just doesn’t add up.  Then again, neither does your average Fail hack’s expenses account.

The “writers” for the likes of the Sun, the Mail, the Mirror, etc etc, are never going to be good journalists, telling the truth and uncovering legitimate stories.  That’s so far beyond the bounds of probability as to be laughable. But they could at least vary the standard fare a little, in the hope of eventually becoming slightly less pisspoor journalists.  Why not link McCormack at least to a Premier League club?  It’d still be made-up crap, most likely – but at least it wouldn’t be quite such transparently obvious crap.  The current habit of using Norwich all the time, just because of the well-known irritant factor for those of a Leeds persuasion, is lazy; it’s unimaginative; it’s boring.  It doesn’t help the clubs concerned, or the fans of those clubs – and neither does it reflect well on proper journalists working for serious newspapers, who tend to get tarred with the same brush by an undiscriminating public as the morons who rattle off the same old crap from their rightful place at the sewer end of Fleet Street.

So please – do us all a favour.  Put a new record on, or just shut up altogether. Or stick to writing astrology columns. You wouldn’t be missed in the real world of sport – and at least doing horoscopes you’d have a bit more chance of being right once in a blue moon.

O give us a break.. and admit you are now a backwood team feeder club… (joke) We aren’t a big club as you were, once upon a time. but we are both in the same boat. In taking not one iota notice of the Daily Fail

Er, maybe you have boats (or wherries) in narwich but I doubt they are big enough to get both teams in?

You have NEVER been a big club and never likely to be either, so why not just enjoy what you get and when you get it and leave it like that?

When you can boast a team FULL of international players anywhere in your past (including reserves) you might have something to shout about.

Yes, history, but we do actually have some……

they are having a giraffe mate, still think they are a big club, well they keep coming back to a bigger club, more chance of hell freezing over, if Cellino reads this or listens to his minions he will know not to even think about this ….. as for the bumkin at Yeovil looks like he will choose another bumkin to play under…. who the hell wants to go to shitwall over Leeds….. I think Holloway has taken his lead from Don Logan (sexy beast he is a dead ringer don’t you think) yes, yes, yes, yes you will fucking join Millwall …. hes been in the east end long enough now to speak the lingo ha

I’m not so sure Rob. The FFFP rules in the Championship may limit what your transparent pay might be; but Ross might find it hard to turn down the key to a brand new combine harvester.

  6. Oooh, someone’s a bit touchy. We can double, probably treble his wages, compared to you guys. He’ll play for “any old team” for three times the wage…I can guarantee that.

    • I tend to agree – but I think if he’s patient, he can do a lot better, ambition-wise. Money’s not everything you know, even a Yorkshireman (or a Scot) knows that!!

      • He’s 27, and if the prem isn’t knocking yet it’s highly unlikely to – so needs to move somewhere it’s more likely to happen. But, ultimately, he will go where the money calls, as it is everything I’m afraid (esp for someone who hasn’t has the pay day he’ll be after before retiring).

      • He does seem motivated by the desire to win something as a captain of a club like Leeds – so he’s in pole position right now. But I agree that the right financial offer could see him playing next season in Stoke’s reserves, or similar.

  7. Well said Rob, pretty spot on as usual,it does make you think hard about the quality minds (or should I say lack of quality minds) of the editors of these blasphemous rags, are they so far removed from reality that they are happy for the usual trash and hyperbole from their own team of lazy Journalists to be printed again and again? I suppose you could be right in thinking alcohol has blurred their already warped reality, I however think they are prodding a stick at the hornets nest as the fast food competition hasn`t quite started yet, and all the other over-paid Prima Donna`s are in Dubai on a man made beach so they have nothing to write about!

Well said! 36 players linked with a move to Leeds so far? It appears that the journalistic criteria here consists of looking at the released or out of contract players and associating them with a club who have supposedly ‘come into money’!
It is at best, lazy journalism, if you can use the term ‘journalism’ at all. Look at their previous claims.. how many have proved to hold any accuracy? Investigating these purported rumours would obviously be too much effort and why would they want accuracy to get in the way of filling column inches! I, for one, am sick of seeing it!

  10. I sincerely hope we are not after him, but like you I can’t imagine why he would come to us now, even if we do offer more money. With your new owners you have as much chance of promotion as we do. I don’t know why you dislike us so much though – we paid you a lot of money for your so called talent who helped to get us relegated (yes, I know it wasn’t down to Becchio as for some reason we couldn’t find a shirt to fit him). Was that your plan all along?

  11. Sorry rob, I think he will go, but not to norwich, he will go Newcastle or malaga.

Here’s why. He had good relationship with mcdermot, he’s gone. however I think Ross would have stayed to play under Gary mac, Scotland legend that he is.

But the new coach will be wackaday, cellinos massive ego will see to that, if we started playing well, he wants the glory from It, he wouldn’t be happy if the fans were giving mcallister the credit & singing songs about him. This is also why he’s kicked out the likes of reaney, Jones and hunter, he wants to be the main man in them executive boxes. Leeds is too bigger club for cellino, he can play the one man band thing at cagliari as they don’t have any former glories, Leeds us a very different club.

    Another false dawn I’m affraid

Not just Leeds, but Brighton, Reading and I hate to say it, but Ipswich etc. at least they they might keep their players, Yeah we’d love McCormack for a season, but we’d only get promoted then lose him to a bigger club (i.e. just about anyone) while we try to stave off relegation – and we know it ain’t gonna happen anyway!!

this might sound like blasphemy (are you ready?…) but I’m not too worried if Ross goes. And the reason for this is that I’m sick of us sounding like a one-man club. The obsession with Ross is a a reflection of the poor state of our beloved club, and while ever we’re hanging to these dazzling individuals, we’re still no better off than we’ve been for the last ten years.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not doing Ross down and I would like him to stay; but I don’t like the fact that we’re all so worried about this single individual. MC needs to re-build a club that is independent of such outstanding talent – that talent needs to be part of the fabric of the team. When we’re back in that situation we’re no longer held to ransom by anybody, regardless of their skills.

So Ross can go or Ross can stay for all I’m concerned. Our team will be completely worthless until we’ve reached the stage where individuals are submerged in the collective good. And reaching that stage is all that concerns me – Ross or no Ross.

  18. As a Norwich fan I agree with most of what’s being said here, the Mail sports desk make up stories all the time about players at all teams and that’s all they do so don’t bother reading it. As for this story, we already have 6 strikers including some academy lads coming through which is always good to see, so I’d be amazed if we bring in another striker which just shows how much work the mail has put in on this one.

  19. We always have supporters telling us we are not a big club anymore. There was a poll done worldwide hits on websites and kits sold globally Leeds United are in the top six of English clubs, more than Manchester city and Chelsea . Our potential is massive , just think what it would be like if we were in the premiership. Onwards and upwards. LEEDS UNITED are bigger than one player, saying that it would be nice if he stayed.MOT

    • I agree on Chelsea, without abramovitch they’d be just a slightly bigger millwall. but man city were much like us, big fan base, decades of shit owners. if you remember back in the 80s in div 2, citeh was our big game, they had much more support than Chelsea, Newcastle, Wednesday etc.. also much like us when they were down in the third their they broke all the attendance records where ever they went. I don’t begrudge citeh their new found wealth, they’ve supported their local club through thick and thin despite living next door to the evil empire and their insidious propaganda machine.
