Should Gutter Rags Mail and Mirror be BANNED from Leeds United? – by Rob Atkinson

Short and sweet this one, folks (at least my trolls will be pleased…)

Many of you will have read my occasional rants about the gutter end of the national press and their entirely destructive attitude towards Leeds United. In pandering to market forces (as, clearly, most of their readership will hate, loathe and detest the very name of our heroes in white), these toilet rolls lose no opportunity to have a dig – the Daily Fail have been at it again today, descending to the type of spite normally associated with pigtail-pulling schoolgirls. I’d provide a link but, on this occasion, I simply can’t be arsed.

Simple question, then, and I value your input as ever – should these two imposters and certain other of the gutter end of the Fourth Estate be banned from Elland Road?

I’d appreciate your views and, if possible, a little bit of the reasoning behind them.

I’d do a poll – but again, quite frankly, I really can’t be bothered. This is one question I just want to get out of the way with as little fuss and bother as possible. After all, it doesn’t affect me, as I never put money into the pockets of these dire excuses for news journals (and I’m sure many of you are the same) – but it does make my teeth itch that the talentless and booze-raddled hacks concerned are infesting the Leeds United press box, and absorbing the gratis hospitality. And no, it’s not envy. Been there, done that; but I was – naturally – coming from a supportive angle, as I love the club. The attitude and agenda of the hostile gutter press is diametrically opposite to mine. And, even though I don’t buy their crap, I’m sick of seeing it happen and reading snippets of their venom online. So, I just wondered what people think about a ban.

Over to you, with thanks.

  1. The mail should be banned full stop, its just a spreader of hate, fear & lies with no redeeming qualities whatsoever

  2. Come on Rob, your better than that as you so eloquently explained what ‘we are Leeds’ means a few weeks ago, would we be able to foster that mentality without everyone except those lucky enough to be from the capital of the North against us?

    We are Leeds!

  6. As much as I understand and appreciate the deep feelings that you and many of us feel towards these papers that appear to have such dislike for our beloved club (and I’d love for them to come out and justify their bigotry), I do believe we have to take the higher ground here and grin and bear it. I say this only for the fact that one manager from the club that shall remain nameless fell out with the media and refused to be interview by the beeb.
He came across as spoilt and petulant. We need to rise above that.

  9. I would wholeheartedly support any ban imposed! Mail, express, sun, star, mirror and while we at it all the small factually incorrect websites that choose sensationalist headlines off the back of a genuine article, shown 3 twitter comments claiming this is a consensus view or pluck some obscure player that they think we may be linked with only later to proudly proclaim said player has snubbed us in favour of . You don’t like Leeds we get it now fuck off and write a real story!! marciare su insieme

  10. Hi Rob, new to this but here we go. Not only would I have them banned I would suggest that a campaign was launched to stop all Leeds supporters from buying these rags. Money talks and if we could reduce their circulation by 10,000 a day, and how many of us are there, how much would this hurt? Further we could ask our newsagents to stop selling these purveyors of bile, refusing to step inside their shops if they did not do so. It’s time to fight back. MO T

Come on Mick, your’e not seriously asking me to to dump the Mirror. Theres a lot of really good stuff in there if you look for it, Andy Capp, The Perishers, Horace for example. Yes , their sports coverage in general and treatment of Leeds stories in particular is abysmal but we can rise above that can’t we. On and On, with the Mighty Leeds and Daily Mirror LOL.

  12. Rob, This subject is a real irritant for you I can feel your exasperation! I really dont think that you could ban them as such, is it really worth going that far? I mean the readership (or is it the pictures?) is dwindling YOY due to word-smiths as yourself, there is such a variety of choice on line now. I think if you can vent your spleen elsewhere, and ignore the ruddy things, they will die a natural death, sadly the days of Richard Baerlein are gone for ever, just like these rags will be….soon, very soon.

    Hi Rob
Like the main content but banning them is not the answer the vast majority of leeds supporters read them wether they believe what is written is there choice i personally would not read the mail under any circumstances .
Banning the press why just those 2 lets be honest non of the press like leeds never had and never will so if some stupid editor wants to pay some non enitity let to us true supporters we know what happens at games that will never change
Keep writing enjoy the season i hope its works better than i fear

Indeed, it just goes to show that despite the best endeavours of the FL,Bates, Harvey and GFH , we are still famous and always will be .
As the wheel of fortune turns, we will rise again and claim our dish best served cold.
Let’s hope Big Mass deals us a winning hand this season and we get that quality on the pitch that we ain’t seen for over a decade.

  16. Really though, if you feel like that, let’s ban the BBC because they hate us as well. Then that sanctimonious prig Lineker (when we eventually go up) will turn to the screen and say, “because of a club ban on the BBC, the game between premiership leaders Leeds, and mid table United can’t be shown, but if you’re a Man utd fan, look away now !” Drifted off there !

  17. I absolutely abhor the way in which the Daily Fail article you refer to flippantly listed items of trivia such as the canteen at Thorpe Arch being closed for a few days as being events of massive impact upon the club and its players. The whole intention of the article was to pour unjustified scorn and ridicule on the club and its owner. The fact that its owner had in effect rescued and basically resurrected the club from almost certain extinction was totally overlooked. I also found it intriguing that the authoress’ father is employed by the BBC in Leeds. (No connection there then).

Why not set up a poll to see which one of the journalists can keep their hand still long enough to click the vote button or for that matter which one can read and understand the f@@@@@g thing in the first place!

The answer to your direct question is simple and direct, OF COURSE THEY SHOULD, FOR ALL TIME.
My reasoning, again quite simple. It seems to me that for a team that is so loathed and despised by these detritus peddling monkeys, they just can’t stop talking about the mighty whites, the last true champions of England. This can only mean they believe that LEEDS UNITED sells their tomorrows fish and chip wrapper, or in harder times, well, you know where I’m going. Ironic really, that in previous recessions it was common practice to get shit on it “after” you had read it, but not as a rule, at time of purchase. Anyway, to get back to the point.
In numerous reports from more reliable sources, our owner has been quoted as saying that he will buy back our HOUSE, our HOME .
So whereas we can’t stop them peddling their drivel, we should never allow them to enter our HOME again.

  24. Banning the newspapers from Elland Road, would in my opinion, inflame the issue. They are in the news business and usually it is BAD news that sells.

Rather than attempt to ban them I would have the club begin to “wine and dine” the reporters and get them on our side which, hopefully may start more productive and positive results.

In the U.S. I get a Daily Mail email which is full of Brit stuff from football to the Royals (argh!). Rarely do I dig down to find trash about LUFC.

So if we can’t win them over with good Yorkshire humor and a few pints then we could resort to some underhanded work to embarrass them (i.e. strippers, compromising pics) in otherwise play dirty. Big Mass will know how to handle them.

  30. There is a precedent for this. I recall in the dim and distant days of the Revie era that Frank McGhee, a hate-filled hack from the Mirror was banned from Elland Road for writing a series of vitriolic slurs that went a long way to us gaining the “Dirty Leeds” tag that still persists today.
Honest opinion and fair reporting is to be encouraged but the type of rubbish being spouted by certain gutter hacks goes way beyond that.

Who owns the press? You’ll find it’s a small clique who aim to control the thoughts of the masses. They know humans don’t like to have an individual opinions and like to repeat what others are saying. It’s a nifty little trick that many are oblivious to.
Sometimes it backfires. From memory, I think it was the London Evening Standard, who came up with the idea to prove the phrase ‘Dirty Leeds’. They sey up a league table on fouls and booking etc. Within weeks it became blatantly clear it wasn’t Leeds who were dirty. The table quietly dissappeared, never to be seen again. Eat your hat and all that.
I am also with the people of Liverpool who still refuse to buy The Sun. The insults they received with obvious backing from the Police and Government of the time put our democracy and freedom of the Press to shame. Add to this the new laws passed by this present government of Press Freedom (WHICH ASTOUNDEDTHE REST OF THE WORLD PRESS), gives us even more reason to give up on the British Press.
