Leeds Transfer Business NOT Complete; Could Swoop for Former Galatasaray Defender – by Rob Atkinson

Jason Denayer

One of the more believable rumours out there, in the wake of Leeds United‘s productive burst of transfer activity lately, is of a possible swoop for Manchester City‘s Belgian international defender Jason Denayer.

23 year old Denayer has yet to make a breakthrough at the Etihad, and is well down the pecking order at City. But loan moves elsewhere have been productive, notably a spell at Galatasaray, where he helped the infamous Istanbul club win the Turkish Cup.

Denayer has also taken in spells at Glasgow Celtic and Sunderland, whilst winning 8 senior caps for Belgium. His international record for such a high-ranking nation says much for his ability; what is needed for his progress to be maintained is perhaps another loan move, giving him competitive minutes in a decent league.

Leeds United needs another central defender, and squad number 5 at Elland Road remains unallocated thus far. A possible return for last season’s Everton loanee Matthew Pennington has been mooted, but many Leeds fans would rather see the club look elsewhere – though this blogger believes that the coaching of Marcelo Bielsa could bring out the very best in Pennington, a young man of vast potential.

One way or another, further business looks likely – that 5 shirt hasn’t been left empty for nothing. The presence of a club as reviled as Galatasaray on Denayer’s CV should not trouble United fans unduly; the lad is a City player, and a Belgian international – that’s what really matters.

Despite a busy week just gone, it should still be an interesting and exciting last few days of the transfer window at Leeds United.

Happy Yorkshire Day!

Seems like an interesting possibility Rob and fits the now established CV requirement of having Championship experience and sounds well worth the risk as a loan player as I am sure Pep would not palm off any duds on his “Messiah” at Leeds. Quite the contrary, I am sure that if this player is a genuine consideration by Bielsa that he and Pep will have discussed his strengths and all the potential benefits of working under Bielsa and his methods in great detail.

I thought that it would never happen Rob, but it appears that our “exciting summer” is materialising at last. Like most other long suffering Leeds United fans hoping that we can storm the Championship from day one, I had hoped that our new players would arrive at the start of pre-season, but fair play to Mr Bielsa for taking time to fully assess his squad “in the flesh”. He hasn’t caused too many surprises with the players he has chosen to move on and I just hope that we get the rub of the green in our early games whilst the new players gel and that we are therefore not playing “catch up” from day one against the growing pack of serious promotion contenders in this goddamn league!!

It will be interesting to see whether the club make any late moves for either the Posh or Brentford midfielders that have been consistently doing the rounds on social media sites for the past fortnight?

If the window continues like this Victor Orta might actually be able to take his stab vest off when attending home games! LOL

  3. Rob,
Let’s hope we get a decent CB in quickly, that’s the outstanding weakness at the moment. I trust Bielsa to make the right choice.
Looking at the squad compared to this time last year some very good progress has been made.
    GK options very much better.
RB same as last year but excellent until injured
    LB much better
CB still needs a new first choice man, Cooper not good enough, Phillips interesting but unless he’s the new Mascherano could get bullied. Pontus, will play better with a senior and talkative player next to him.
Midfield, Forshaw (injured) but much better. Klich will suit Bielsa’s style.
The new boys from City and Chelsea, highly rated so fingers crossed.
Bamford, proven goalscorer and highly mobile. Much better.
Roberts and the other kids should improve and be given chances.
The rest… hopefully improving under new management and the new system of play, it just might bring the best out of them, don’t be too quick to judge we’ve got a tough start and they will still be bedding in until October.
The manager… big improvement, tactics should be fun.

Promotion chances…for me they depend on getting a quality CB in, we won’t win anything if we can’t defend, not in this league.

Any tips on how I can stop my brother going into orbit, it’s the name of Galatasaray that will light the blue touch paper. He is so Leeds United he even bleeds white, blue and yellow.

  5. I’m always wary of loan signings as I don’t think they try hard enough, but Cooper needs to be moved on. I’ve been impressed so far with Bielsa especially for getting upwards of £7m for one of the most overrated players in the championship. Thank god we won’t have to listen to that effing song anymore too.
