In Demand Icelandic Star Striker to Sign for Leeds? – by Rob Atkinson

Alfreð Finnbogason

Alfreð Finnbogason (SC Heerenveen)

Don’t shoot the messenger – this is very much a rumour.  But, there are rumours and there are rumours, and this one has the flavour of possible authenticity about it.

Alfreð Finnbogason is a full Icelandic international currently on the books of SC Heerenveen in Holland’s Eredivisie.  On the face of it, a move to Leeds United might seem less than likely, though stranger things have happened in the loan market, where normal rules are suspended, with the transfer window proper tightly shut till January. Finnbogason has been the subject of a bid in the region of £4 million from an un-named Bundesliga side, and when Celtic came enquiring after a replacement for the departed Gary Hooper, they were told to find £5 million, or go back whence they came.

On the plus side: Finnbogason seems to have a desire to play in English football; he is in a hot streak of form that has stirred interest far and wide; his wages are at a level that might not turn even a Leeds owner’s face too sickly white with shock – and, perhaps crucially, the source of this rumour came with the confident advice to slap a bet on the lad being the next Leeds United signing.

It’s a name that might take some getting your tongue around, never mind the cost of printing it on the back of a Leeds shirt should he actually roll up at Elland Road; but the strangest names can swiftly become familiar.  Pierre van Hooijdonk, for instance.  If this lad, with the pedigree he’s reputed to have, were to fill the number 9 shirt for Leeds, then the season might be about to pick up very considerably.

Alfie Finnbogason – remember the name (if you can).  He could be the subject of a breaking news story coming your way quite soon.

  1. You keep commenting Paul, if that’s how you get your jollies. More chance of me voting Tory than actually publishing any of ’em 😉

      • actually a lot of historical sites on the net do refer to iceland as scandinavian……. it seems to be something thats been in question for a long time so perhaps you could send your question to stephen fry on QI and leave this guy alone

Some opinions belief scandanavia(northern germanic countries) to also include Finland,Iceland and the Faroe Islands as well as Norway,Sweden and Denmark if you want to split hairs.MOT.

It isn’t, but the Nordic Countries (that includes Iceland and Finland as well as Norway, Sweden and Denmark) is often confused with Scandinavian.

      • I think to be fair the previous commenter was fastening on to the comparison between one Alfie beloved of Leeds fans and another Alfie who just might be if the club could pull this off. Clearly, this has got the hair-splitting brigade VERY excited – which is ever so slightly tragic.

    • Actually Scandinavia is Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Baltic countries are Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Leathua. Iceland well it is just Iceland.

  3. It is about time we signed a decent forward as all the players we were “supposed” to be linked with are slowly but surely being snapped up ie. billy sharp, matty fryatt etc. if we dont get one soon i can see us slipping further down the league as a forward line of hunt & vardey hardly gets the pulse racing does it?

  4. 33 in 37 in the league for Heerenveen including 9 in 6 this season…why would they consider letting him go unless its for big money? Especially not on loan. I don’t think him wanting to play in England will be enough of a factor to make them sell him.

Newcastle tried to get him on loan in end of August but he said that it wasn’t a option to go out on loan but he would consider transfers to the Premier League and Bundesliga.

I would love to see him in a white shirt this season but I’m afraid that there is no change that would happen 😦

    • Dear Icelandic White are you or are you not Scandanavian? We’ve been having a little discussion earlier.

        Nope…. but almost.

In Iceland we talk about the Nordic Countries, which include Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Faroe Islands and Greenland.

We don’t look at ourselves as Scandinavian, but Norway and Denmark in particular but also Sweden are our “cousin” nations (? not good translation i guess) but Faroes are more like our “brother” nation or our favorite cousin.

  13. Now, the one I’d really like to see at Leeds is Man City’s Guidetti, as mentioned on Sabotage Times. Let’s get some momentum behind this rumour and make it happen 🙂

I’m in Wakefield tomorroe for a few more sets with the regiond biggest fool.

    • As you can tell from Jonty’s spelling, he’s a major contender for “Biggest Fool” wherever he goes. You might expect a tennis match between two fools to be close, but whoever plays Jonty tends to be heavily odds-on. If he remembers to take his “tennis bat” as he calls it, expect a straight-sets defeat and a tearful tantrum from the Man With The Silly Name.

      • Can’t see us signing anyone exciting. We prefer lower league players or journeymen. I hope we sign the lad and guidetti but theirs more chance of me becoming a morrocan fisherman with Austin dominanating the midfield….. Could make top 6 🙂

        Finbogason and Guidetti

  15. Robbie Rogers also played for them –
Remember him? No notably do or shouldn’t say want to. Crap team in a crap league so the fact he scored nearly 0.96 goal to game makes no difference. £5m is a joke! He’s £600k tops.

  16. We can’t sign him on loan as you are only allowed domestic loans in the emergency window.
