Super Leeds 1, Dire Millwall 0 as United Edge to Safety – by Rob Atkinson

Massed ranks of Miwwwaww fans cunningly disguised as blue seats for safety

Leeds emerged from lowly murk into the sunshine of the top half of the Championship table, without needing to be anywhere near their best, courtesy of this narrow win over a very poor Millwall side. The Londoners remain stuck in the last relegation spot which is hopefully to be their destiny – and it is only this final place on the trapdoor which seems likely to be disputed over the rest of the season. Blackpool and Wigan, both recently Premier League clubs, look certain to drop into the third tier, largely unlamented. Until lately, Leeds had appeared candidates to be embroiled in the fight over that last, doom-laden slot – but now we have eight lovely, precious points of clear daylight between the Whites and those who are about to die.

A tight and nervous game, seemingly played on the high-wire between two teams horribly aware of the lack of any safety net, was settled by Alex Mowatt‘s first-half free-kick, which sailed beyond the reach of the helpless Forde in the Millwall goal. The Leeds midfielder’s left-footed strike appeared to be aided by a slight deflection on its way into the net – and that was the way the cookie was destined to crumble, on an afternoon when the toothless Lions raised little above a weary growl as they were ultimately tamed.

Leeds’ penalty appeal embargo evidently continues, with referees now under Football League orders to book any United player fouled in the opposition box – for “cheek”, presumably. You have to laugh – it’s the hysterical alternative to crying – but this really is getting beyond a joke now. Fortunately for Leeds, a sudden ability to preserve a clean sheet has ensured six precious points since last week’s Brentford/Salisbury scandal. The Championship table makes much more comfortable reading now than we could have dared believe last Saturday evening.

So Leeds can at last afford themselves the luxury of looking up towards the distant play-off zone, rather than casting fearful, hunted glances over their shoulders at the unseemly dogfight in and around the area above the bottom three. Blackpool and Wigan are surely gone; it may be that Brighton, Rotherham and Fulham are in most danger from any late-season Millwall revival.

On today’s evidence, such an event seems less than likely – and, if we do end up losing two Lancastrian clubs and one grotty Bermondsey eyesore, then the celebrations in and around Life, Leeds United, the Universe & Everything Towers will be long, loud and gleeful. It’s a welcome relief, for the moment, from any nagging relegation worries for Leeds. And – fingers crossed – it may well be a fond Championship farewell come May for those not-so-lovable cockney troglodytes from the New Den.

  3. Have to give credit to Redders for the turnaround.
Murphy, Wooton & Morison are like new signings. Murphy especially is like a man possessed – chasing everything down, tackling like a demon and passing and shooting expertly. He looks like a million pound footballer.
Getting the best out of the clumsy powerhouse Austin when no-one else could.
Charlie Taylor looks way better than Warnock already and there seems to be no limit to what Mowatt, Byram & especially Cook can achieve.
Finally, Bamba. Just what our defence needed. So talented he even makes Bellusci look good.
The future’s bright. The future’s white.

ha-ha, couldn’t agree more Rob – two clean sheets! Has Redders finally sorted out the defence? We just need Steve Morison to score a goal – its only his all round contribution to the team through assists and defence and intelligently leading the line that stops him becoming a tragic Billy Paynter-type figure. League 1 for Millwall? I hope so – its their natural home and NOBODY is going to miss their supporters that’s for sure. MOT 🙂

7 games this year, 4 wins, two draws and one loss. Will the real LUFC please stand up? Can someone explain to me what this sudden change is a consequence of? We need to keep on drinking it by the gallon, whatever it is.

I jokingly said we were on promotion form a couple of weeks ago, that no longer seems like a joke! Rob, can you please reassure me that I’m not suddenly going to wake up, have my breakfast and see that we’re beneath Blackpool?

  6. I have to laugh Rob , old holloway as much as I like the bloke reckons it’s the police fault that his team lost cos they didn’t have their usual full backing (what 300 ?) because they have to collect their tickets from the services. Maybe if they hadn’t caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to the double deckers last time the police let them come without the restrictions on them then they would be treat with respect. By the way Millwall scum its not an excuse for bringing a bus full . We still took 2000 to Cardiff when we had our tickets to pick up from the services . Still no need to worry boys you won’t have to play us ever again . It’s been emotional as vinny would say. MOT .

  10. Been reading the Millwall fans comments on other posts. Makes me laugh, whingeing about treatment by police, we had similar from Cardiff and still took 2000 fans. Apparently Millwall fans don’t cause trouble any more, they are as good as anyone else’s fans and should be treated with respect. Funny though, even though there was only 100 or so of them at ER today they still had police and stewards in a flap, not sure what they were up to but it looked like several had to be removed.

    Onwards and upwards LEEDS.

  11. Holloway has gone down in my estimations. I always secretly knew that most of the things he says were nonsense, but he was funny and refreshingly honest on telly and for a while I liked him, as did most of the Country. But now the West Country charm has worn a bit thin and the fact that he talks out of his anus is all we are left with. He states that “Leeds can bring as many to Millwall as they like”…Wrong…we are only allowed the upper tier and would easily sell double that amount if allowed.
“Millwall are just like any other fans”…Wrong…they are obsessed with disrespecting Chris and Kevin in an attempt to incite Leeds fans.
He is also completely unaware that we have similar restrictions when we go to Cardiff and again could probably shift double our allocation.
If he thinks Millwall were worth a draw today then he really does live in another world. Had Morison/Antenucci kept their heads in front of goal we would have been 3 or 4 goals up. We cut them to pieces at times but our finishing stopped Millwall being humiliated. Not to mention the usual denied penalties, which other teams seem to get. Also Millwall took about 250 to Birmingham midweek. The facts Ian…not the nonsense.

    • Spot on. Holloway came out with some refreshing quotes after their fans’ usual disgusting behaviour first game of the season – and I wrote as much at the time. But he’s gone down in my estimation too after today’s desperate nonsense.

  12. I can’t make my mind up.
Do we persevere with hard working Morison, hoping the goals will come?
Do we give Antenucci the nod and hope the linesman doesn’t notice he is offside?
Do we give big Edgar a go, and rain crosses into the box, as if Matt Smith had come back?
Do we give Billy Sharp another chance to run into the crowd amid scenes of joy?
Do we give Montenegro a chance to prove he actually exists and is not just the name of a Country?
Do we bring back Doukara, a poor mans Yakubu?
I cant make my mind up.
Probably because none of the options really offer the answer.

  13. When playing outside of London, Millwall never appear to take anymore than 600 fans anywhere, which is absolutely pathetic anyway, so I don’t know what that serial whinger Holloway is talking about, when he says that the West Yorkshire Police won the game for Leeds.
Holloway and his badly behaved supporters are only annoyed, because their Cup Final was ruined, by Leeds daring to spoil their big day, by winning Saturdays game.
Millwall have a restrictive 200 allocation at Elland Road, because their supporters simply can not help themselves, but to misbehave like supporters from the bad old days of the 1970’s and 1980’s and 200 are a lot more easy to control, than 2000 or in their case 600.
Millwall have been an absolute pain in the arse to Leeds over the last ten years, particularly at their bum hole stadium, where the entire game turns in to a circus, where some of their scum bag supporters brazenly dress in Galatasaray shirts and also invade the pitch, which their stewards and police turn a blind eye to.

One other minor point that is irritating me is Holloway’s claim that police restricted them to 200 tickets. That surely isn’t true. Police restrictions might have been the reason behind them shifting only 200 tickets for the game, but that is a very different thing altogether.

    • Very true. I’m publishing something about this shortly, and I make the point that, in similar “bubble” matches, Leeds manage to take their usual vast numbers to the likes of Cardiff City.
