All of those Leeds fans devastated by the Football League’s refusal to confirm the loan transfer of Andrea Tabanelli may just find that there is some consolation in the pipeline. We may actually have our Italian signing, after all. His name? One Alessandro del Piero. Now that would be something of a coup – and those mourning the loss (apparently) of Tabanelli could cast off their funereal garb and don some happy clothes.
This could just be one of those stories that go with the territory of having a minted owner. We’re going to get rumours with our King of Corn, just as the likes of West Ham did with their King of Porn. But then again, it might just be true – and it might happen even if Boss Brian McDermott isn’t all that keen.
Sports Direct News are reporting that Leeds United’s prospective new owners want to make former Italy international Alessandro Del Piero their marquee signing. The player will be out of contract in September with current club Sydney FC in the Aussie League. At the age of 39, this wouldn’t only be a playing deal; del Piero would also have a coaching role at Elland Road. But a player of such undoubted world class might well have a contribution to make on the field, even at such a venerable age.
On the craziness scale, this probably scores at least a 9.5 – but with the way things are likely to go under the legendarily eccentric and hands-on Cellino, it’s unlikely to be the last bizarre link of some evening star to LS11.
Watch this space…
Del Piero would be welcome with open arms, he would surely help to attract some half decent players, as he went to play in Oz after turning down the chance to join Liverpool (for obvious reasons). A lesson one of our ex-players, I can’t even mention his name, should have learnt!

If that actually happened I’d go to town on myself. One of my favourite ever players. Even at 39, he would smash this league

Heighten your expectations gentlemen,we’re not Hartlepool.

Bloody hell, Mick – we could NEVER aspire to the legend that is Jeff Stelling!! Unbelievable….

Do you know? That was the first club that came to mind, should’ve said Carlisle, Accrington or Barnstonworth. I forgot botoxface supports hartlepool. Anyway you get the gist, besides Del Piero takes his saga cruise in the autumn so the logistics would be tricky.

It would be great to have such a quality player around the players I’m sure they’d get a buzz of him, sayin all this any chance we could add Totti to the list ,

I have. Watched lufc since 1957 I was ten years old so I have witnessed a lot over time and would welcome anything that would give us a boost. Not wanting to. Put damper on things I will not feel completely happy until the F.L. . Approve this take over

Rob, I agree with Tim. I like this colour (or white) – both easier to read. Recently it’s been like trying to read your blog in a disco when I’ve got a hangover! 😉

Seems to me cellino has a bee in his bonnet and a point to prove , I know he fell out big time with the council in calgari and that was the source of most of his “wrong doings” , maybe Leeds is his way of sticking two fingers up at them , look what calgari could have had if you had worked with me sort of thing,, nothing worse than a billionaire scorned !!! , lets just sit back and enjoy the ride boys , it might be a bit rocky but I don’t think its going to be boring , MOT

Del Piero for Austin ,what next Purlo for Norris (,if he fails to get over the line next week) those will just be dreams as the club is loosing 1 million aweek & it will be points off again .YOU will be very welcome Mr. Cellino

Rob, this is the kind of story we may well get used to. I know the FL have a big role to play in finalising the situation but given the history between them and us – I’d rather not think too much about it.
Great news that he states Cellino wants to buy the stadium back but I would advise him to have a word with those in the know and just check whether he needs to have a consultation with someone from a very specific gypsy community. The last 10 years of the tragic-comedy known as Leeds United feels like a 10 year curse

I would take Purlo but not Del Piero…. hes at the retirement stage. He wouldn’t be able to cope with the championship so would be a joke transfer

Been there done it. I remember a certain bill fotherby in the Leeds united newspaper(remember that!) telling us he was going to sign maradona for Leeds. Shoot me down in flames but why not try signing some players who are good and have a future not people who were good in the past. Failing thatbring vinnie back!!!!!!

Ah, Vinnie. The catalyst, the spirit, the inspiration. If only.
